Eastman Master Series VL.605
This model combines all the benefits of our master luthiers' plate tuning techniques with the special German-style multi-layer shaded spirit varnish also found on our model 405 instruments. The result is a modestly priced master instrument with outstanding projection, tone color, and playability, not to mention beautiful flamed maple and premium spruce tonewoods enhanced by the luminous hand-applied varnish.

In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, a small number of master workshops in Markneukirchen, Germany distinguished themselves by developing some of the best varnishes of the modern era. The varnish we use on our model 405 instruments emulates these exceptional varnishes from a century ago.

The setup proved better than that of many of the other violins we looked at, the pegs worked smoothly and easily, and the striking antique look and rich, dark-red varnish won high praise. The one-piece, flamed maple back and the boxwood-and-ebony fittings displayed exceptional craftsmanship. And the Eastman Pernambuco bow, with its imitation whalebone winding, has an effortless response and produces a refined sound. We are confident recommending the Eastman violin to the advanced student as well as the promising beginner—the violin is one of the best higher-priced models we evaluated and its quality far exceeds that of some instruments at comparable prices.
